Willowbrook Care Home in Birmingham is a care home specialising in the continuing healthcare management of people with advanced dementia or mental disorder.
Willowbrook had used PlaySmart previously for surfacing and were now looking for an alternative surface to the existing stone slab pathway that offered protection to the residents should they suffer a fall, whilst enjoying their very pleasant outdoor area.
After carrying out a site survey PlaySmart recommended JungleMulch, an attractive and natural looking material made from recycled rubber tyres and coloured with unique organic pigments. JungleMulch was a perfect solution as it is permeable and provides excellent slip resistance (tested to BS EN 1177 (2008) and BS 7188).
From the range of blends available, the Care Home initially chose Rustic, a blend of Red and Brown but in the end opted for JungleMulch Original, a blend of Red, Yellow and Brown. JungleMulch was installed over the existing pathway reducing groundwork costs and timber edging installed by the client’s contractor was used.
Willowbrook is committed to promoting a self-directed and meaningful quality of life through evidence-based person-centred care and this was evident in the plans the home had for their outdoor area. The pathways linked some thoughtfully considered destinations of interest for the residents including seating areas, a post box, barbeque area and a shop!
PlaySmart worked closely with Paul Willis to ensure the project ran smoothly, minimising disruption to the residents and working around other schedules of works. Our team of experienced installers took 4 days to carefully install the two areas totalling 253m2.
“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at PlaySmart for completing a fantastic job at our Care Home. The installation team were brilliant throughout and to say we are delighted with the end result is an understatement. Not only does the JungleMulch look fantastic, we are happy to have found a product that will protect the residents of our home and keep them safe in the event of a fall. I hope to work with you again when we extend our existing facility or when we open our next home.” – Paul Willis
