Education experts have recently stated that schooling for children should be delayed by around 2 years, meaning that the age at which a child would enter education would be around 6 or 7 years old.
Apparently the damaging pressure to perform well in class can affect children in the long term when exposed to this kind of pressure at such a young age. A letter stating that the UK should take a leaf out of the Scandinavian book putting off lessons with any kind of formality for a further two year was written by 130 teachers, authors and academics.
Currently starting at the age of 4 or 5 experts are saying that this is causing profound damage in an era where we should be encouraging education through play. Education secretary Michael Grove dismissed the call saying it was ‘misguided’.
This is causing quite a heated debate within the news at the moment, and there are definitely pros and cons for both sides of the argument, however is it really the age at which children start school that matters or what they actually are taught both at home and at school that really counts? Children exploring and playing outdoors with playground equipment is always going to broaden their creative side and increase their social interaction with other children over sitting at a desk, likewise children’s numeracy and reading skills need the concentration that an hour or two at a desk requires… It just depends which is perceived at being more important…
